The Days You Left Me

She writes herself a letter every morning so she won't forget the man she loved. What she doesn't know is that her own hand has been lying to her for forty years. Eleanor Whitfield's dementia is stealing everything - her daughter's name, the sound of her own kitchen, the year, the season, herself. But as the disease strips away four decades of careful forgetting, it starts handing back the one thing she buried on purpose: the truth about the rainy September night her husband died. Not in the accident she's told everyone about. In a river, pulling a stranger's son out of the current, on the same night she'd sent him out the door in anger over an affair that never happened. The Days You Left Me is a novel about the letters a dying mind writes to itself, the daughter who has to decide whether digging up her mother's worst secret is an act of love or a betrayal, and the old man on the other side of town who has waited thirty years for the chance to say four words to a woman who might not remember him long enough to hear them. It will break your heart in the right order, and then, somehow, put it back together better than it found it.
