Arnold is a capable photographer who has been contributing to Life and the Sunday Times of London for years and has received many awards for her photography. Perhaps that is what makes this collection, which covers 35 years of work, so disappointing. This is a book in search of a theme. Though Arnold states briefly at the beginning that she has been fascinated by the world of work for all of her professional life, this seemingly random collection of images shows people from many different cultures doing many different things--but working? That's stretching the definition of the word. Work can be horrible, joyous, enriching, debilitating, etc., and by isolating visual moments in human activity Arnold intended to inform and generate empathy. The book does little of either. Not recommended.
