I Dead: The Quiet Afterlife of Ezekiel Roots

Ezekiel “Zek” Roots dies calmly—just as he lived.

He does not wake up in heaven or hell. He wakes up standing, in a quiet afterlife that offers no judgment, no explanations, and no easy answers.

Accompanied by three unsettling guides—a silent dog, a stern moral presence, and a sardonic observer of systems—Zek moves through a netherworld that looks less like eternity and more like a series of uncomfortable clarifications. Here, belief systems compete for attention, obedience demands compensation, and people repeat the same choices forever while calling it peace.

As each guide reaches the limit of usefulness, Zek is left alone to confront an unsettling truth: he did not live badly. He lived cautiously.

I Dead is a quietly comic, metaphysical novella about responsibility, courage, and the danger of mistaking calm for wisdom. With restrained humor and philosophical bite, it asks not what happens after death—but what we postpone while alive, and what it costs to stop waiting.

Thoughtful, unsettling, and deeply human, I Dead will resonate with readers who enjoy literary fiction that lingers long after the final page.
