Synopsis
Throughout history, explorers have forged paths through uncharted areas. In 1845, Sir John Franklin led two ships through the Arctic to find a Northwest Passage to Asia. In 1910, Sir Robert Falcon Scott led a team of Englishmen on a race to the South Pole. In 1921, Inupiat seamstress Ada Blackjack joined a group of white men establishing a trading post on Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean. In 1925, Percy Fawcett trekked into the jungles of South America looking for a lost city of gold. None of these ventures went as planned, but the stories of these deadly expeditions continue to thrill adventure seekers. These graphic novel accounts lead readers through legendary expeditions to learn who, if anyone, survived to tell their tales.
About the Authors
Lisa M. Bolt Simons has published more than 60 nonfiction children's books, as well as four middle grade "choose your path" novels and an adult history book. She's twice received an Honorable Mention for the McKnight Artist Fellowship for Writers in Children's Literature. She's also received two Minnesota State Arts Board grants and other accolades for her writing. Lisa is a proud mom to her science- and math-minded twin daughter and son. Originally from Colorado, Lisa lives in Minnesota with her husband, who also loves to read.
Dr. Katrina Phillips is a citizen of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe. She earned her BA and PhD in History from the University of Minnesota, and she teaches Native American history and the history of the American West at Macalester College.
Cindy L. Rodriguez is the author of the YA novel When Reason Breaks and has contributed to the anthology Life Inside My Mind: 31 Authors Share Their Personal Struggles. She has also written the text for Volleyball Ace, Drill Team Determination, and Gymnastics Payback, all part of the Jake Maddox series. Before becoming a teacher, she was an award-winning reporter for The Hartford Courant and researcher for The Boston Globe's Spotlight Team. She is a founder of Latinxs in Kid Lit, a blog that celebrates children's literature by/for/about Latinxs. Cindy is a big fan of the three Cs: coffee, chocolate, and coconut. She is currently a middle school reading specialist in Connecticut, where she lives with her family.
John Micklos, Jr. has written more than 50 children's books spanning a wide range of ages and genres. His work includes picture books, poetry books, and numerous nonfiction books. Popular titles include One Leaf, Two Leaves, Count with Me! (Penguin/Nancy Paulsen Books, 2017), which was chosen for inclusion in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program for multiple years. John's other top-selling books include 125 True Stories of Amazing Pets (contributor) and 125 Cute Animals (contributor), both published by National Geographic Kids. He also has written dozens of biographies, history books, and social studies books for educational publishers such as Capstone and Cavendish Square. Biographies include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Amelia Earhart, Alexander Graham Bell, Abraham Lincoln, Muhammad Ali, Sequoyah, Geronimo, and others. History topics include the Revolutionary War (six-book series), Civil War, Challenger tragedy, Gold Rush, Lewis and Clark Expedition, and many others. A resident of Newark, Delaware, John enjoys visiting schools (in person or via Zoom) and conducting writing workshops with students of all ages. Since graduation, Paul McCaffrey has worked as a freelance illustrator, mainly in the area of children's education. His clients have included NME, Vox, Punch, Deadline, Empire, CUP, OUP, Attack! Books, Macmillan, Harcourt and Heinemann, amongst others. More recently, he has drawn comics for companies as diverse as Marvel, DC, IDW, Thinkable and Network Distribution. For Titan Comics, he has produced a number of covers as well as drawing Anno Dracula 1895: Seven Days in Mayhem and co-creating Adler with Lavie Tidhar. He lives in the UK with his wife and cat and far too many books than is good for him.
