Review
At the bookstore: I would like to take a moment to introduce you to a rather extraordinary children s book that is being released. The title of the story is THE DEAL IS ON STRIKE THREE - The Story Mudville Never Knew Readers may recognize the coincidental name of the book s father, another Casey at Bat, who teaches his 8-year old son about important family values by using baseball folklore as the foundation. Throughout the story, we are reminded how important it is to use the same positive principles off the ball field that we are called to practice on it. This goes far beyond mere sportsmanship, to include integrity, courage, and strength of character. We are also reminded of the traditional ideals such as good triumphing over evil, and that good things come to those that are hardworking, patient, and grateful. Written by Peter Fertig and Rudy Saviano, the storyline is both familiar and fresh all at the same time. In taking a new approach to an old theme, the authors have created a book that can easily be enjoyed and shared by adults and their children alike. The book is complimented by many period-styled illustrations by artist Penny Musso Weber, whose drawings leap off the page while not distracting from the story. The combination of these dynamic images and word will surely capture your children s attention span from cover to cover. Additionally, two of baseball s most celebrated superstars, Bob Feller and Tom Seaver provide the Introduction and Forward while echoing this reviewer s praise of the meaningful lessons that are presented in this book. Here is a lesson plan for parents and children to discuss together. We have all read about what s wrong with youth sports in America. I know what it means to win. I also know that there are things besides wins and losses that differentiate between winners and losers. When you read this book to your child, you will be instilling values that your child will take to the schoolyard today, and to the world tomorrow. The Deal Is On Strike Three uses Baseball Folklore to teach parents and children alike valuable lessons about right and wrong, good and evil, and winning and losing. As the characters come to life, we come to see the importance of family values, and the power of good over evil. If you ve only read it once, you haven t touched all the bases. This is a must read for Little Leaguers, their parents, and any child involved in competitive sports today. Read it to your child tonight. The Deal Is On Strike Three is Number One on my bestseller list. TOM SEAVER --Tom Seaver
I have never seen a baseball book that teaches family values and life s lessons to children as does The Deal is on Strike Three. It presents the Great American Pastime, Baseball, with which l have been proudly associated for more than 70 years, in a way that reminds all of us about the true fabric of America. Parents should read this book and discuss the lessons it teaches with their children. I am very proud to be part of it. One of the reasons I am so pleased to endorse The Deal is on Strike Three is that I know my late father, William Feller, who died in 1943, seven years after he developed brain cancer, also would have been proud for his son to be honored in this manner. It s because everything in Peter Fertig s and Rudy Saviano s book, subtitled, The Story Mudville Never Knew, is a lesson of hope and faith and love, all the family values that my dad and mother Lena stressed to me and my younger sister Marguerite as we were growing up.
