“Dear Books Of The Reign Of King Edward The First” by Alfred J. Horwood is an edition of The Chronicles and Memorials of Great Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages, focusing on the Reign of Edward I. This 1863 edition presents the first part of a four-part excerpt, including a Preface, Appendix to the Preface, and the start of Year-Book style material for Michaelmas Term 1302–1303. The work explains the project to publish scarce medieval records with minimal commentary and to collate manuscripts from Lincoln's Inn and the British Museum. It foregrounds themes in Edward I's law: the growth of English common law through Year Books, bilingual pleadings in Norman-French, Latin, and English, and the editorial approach to rights, writs, and pleadings. The excerpt offers detailed snapshots of feudal litigation in Cornwall—seisin, tenure, dower, wardship, feoffment, and the forms of writs, inquest, and judgment—together with lists of litigants and officers that reveal the social reach of medieval justice.
