About the Author

Harland was born on June 21, 1917, in Catlow Valley, Harney County, Oregon, to Hugh & Lettie Jones. Harland's father, Hugh, emigrated in the 1880s from Anglesey, Wales, to Washington County, Kansas-where he married Lettie Shoop in 1899. In 1909 they left Kansas by covered wagon heading west, where Hugh filed on a homestead in South Eastern Oregon, in 1913. It was on that homestead in Catlow Valley where Harland was born in 1917. In 1941 Harland was drafted into the US Army, where he was a radio operator in Regimental Headquarters, 185th Infantry, 40th division. He went by transport ship across the Pacific to Guadalcanal, New Britain, and the Philippines. In 1945, upon the end of the war, he returned to Burns, Oregon-and five months later, on April 20, 1946, he married his sweetheart, Faye Grigg, in Baker, Oregon. Harland moved his family from Burns to Harper in 1950, then in 1952 to 56 they lived at Crater Lake National Park. From 1957 to 59 they returned to Harper, and in 1960 they moved to Ontario where they lived until Harland died peacefully at home on August 28, 2013. He was 96 years old. On June 21, 2014, Harland was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Oregon, where he received a full Military Funeral honoring his service in the United States Army during World War II (1942-1945).
