Great reading copy, Save money and recycle books! Shipped with care in a bubble mailer. --- 194 pages. Edited by Valerie M. Hope and Eireann Marshall, this collection of ten essays grew out of a conference on pollution and the ancient city. It looks at how Greek and Roman communities understood disease, dealt with their dead, and arranged urban space around both. An introduction by the editors links the essays. Marshall opens with a case study of Cyrene, whose dead were buried outside the walls while heroes were honored at the center of town. The Greek essays then cover civil strife described as a sickness of the body politic, Hippocratic and tragic ideas of the city, and the Athenian plague of 430 BC. The middle essays deal with medical writers on urban air, marshland settlements, and the boundaries of Rome. The Roman section covers the honor and abuse of corpses, the Esquiline burial pits, and the undertaking trade. A shared bibliography and an index are included.
