Maroon cloth covered boards with gilt titling and publisher's device on spines; undated reprint (1974?) of the 1888 edition. Faint stripes across tails of spines, indicating removal of a call number. Light rubbing to spine ends and corners of boards. Some sunning to fore-edge of boards, with some light uneven sunning to boards. Some light splash marks to the head of Volumes I and II. Name of previous owner (Page Smith) in black ink at head of front free endpaper in each volume. Two-hour reserve checkout sheet on rear free endpaper of volumes I-IV. Interiors otherwise clean and unmarked. Bindings firm. Due to the size and excessive weight of this set, additional postage may be required for international orders. This set originally belonged to the library of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and aside from the checkout slips in the rear of each volume and a label ghost on each spine, one would not know that these are ex-library books. The set was then owned by the historian Page Smith, who was the author of the Bancroft Prize winning two-volume biography of John Adams and the eight-volume 'A People's History of the United States'.
