"Film-maker Stephen Weeks needed to find a location which would perfectly evoke the England of the 1930s. His problem was that most of the likley sites hade become over-familiar to audiences. He wanted unfamiliar but convincing country houses in a landscape free from jarring traces of the post-war world, and motor-cars which did not look as they were on hire from a motor museum.
