This book gives a thorough and authoritative account of a crucially important episode in the post-War history of the UK, using the privileged position of someone who was at the heart of events and decision-taking. It traces the antecedents of the crisis and takes the reader through the complex process of economic and political analysis and shows how that analysis came to play such an important part in the negotiations which led to the IMF loan. It looks at both the technical and political aspects of the crisis and in its concluding section it examines whether the political and administrative apparatus was equal to the tasks it had to tackle.

About the Author

Sir Douglas Wass spent the main working part of his life as a senior civil servant in the Treasury, which he joined in 1946 after War service. His experience ranged over all aspects of the Treasury and he represented the UK in both the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He was the Private Secretary to two Chancellors and to the Chief Secretary. In 1981 he was appointed Joint Head of the Civil Service. After retirement he gave the Reith Lectures on how the system of representative government works in the UK.
