Decolonizing History

For centuries, Africa’s place in world history has been deliberately erased. Colonial powers rewrote the past, portraying Africa as a “Dark Continent” without civilizations, sciences, or philosophies. Textbooks glorified Europe as the cradle of progress, while museums displayed looted African artifacts as trophies of empire. Behind this silence was a project of domination—history itself was weaponized to justify slavery, colonialism, and racism.

In this groundbreaking book, Sam Prajnananda takes readers on a powerful journey to uncover how this erasure happened—and how Africans and their allies are reclaiming the truth. From the colonial classroom to the Aryan Model, from the stolen Benin Bronzes to the revolutionary scholarship of Cheikh Anta Diop, this book dismantles the myths that have shaped global consciousness.

Drawing on historical evidence, case studies, and contemporary movements, Decolonizing History reveals Africa not as a footnote but as a foundation of civilization. It explores the ancient philosophies of Ma’at and Ubuntu, the manuscripts of Timbuktu, and the vibrant role of youth using digital platforms to restore memory. It also offers bold proposals: curriculum reform, restitution of artifacts, digital archives, and Pan-African unity through history.

More than a book of history, this is a manifesto for liberation. To decolonize history is to reclaim identity, dignity, and sovereignty. It is to understand that Africa was never absent—it was always central. And it is to affirm that restoring Africa’s truth restores humanity itself.

For readers of Walter Rodney, Cheikh Anta Diop, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, and Martin Bernal, this book is essential reading for anyone who believes history should serve freedom, not empire.
