Deep Eutectic Solvents for the Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Natural Sources

This Reprint presents a current overview of deep eutectic solvents as sustainable media for the extraction and stabilization of bioactive compounds from natural sources. The collected contributions cover both fundamental and applied aspects of the field, from solvent design, physicochemical properties and predictive screening to extraction mechanisms, process intensification and biological evaluation of the resulting extracts. Particular attention is given to natural deep eutectic solvents and supramolecular formulations, as well as to their integration with ultrasound, microwave-assisted and other green extraction strategies. The Reprint highlights applications on diverse plant matrices and agri-food residues, including sources rich in phenolics, flavonoids, coumarins, curcuminoids, oleuropein and other high-value compounds. Together, the articles show how deep eutectic solvents can improve extraction efficiency, selectivity and stability while supporting biomass valorization, circular processing and reduced reliance on conventional organic solvents.
