About this Item
A very scarce collection of papers documents and speeches read at the trial of G.A. Denison in the Prodiocesan Court of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The defence of the Archdeacon of Taunton in answer to the charges preferred against him in respect to the Doctrine of the Real presence. The charge raises two issues: Whether the "doctrines or positions" of the defendant are, or are not, admissible within the pale of the Church of England. The second being whether the "doctrines or positions" of the defendant are, or are not, the doctrines of the Church of England. George Anthony Denison became Archdeacon of Taunton in 1851. Archdeacon Denison was a Tractarian. In 1856 he was prosecuted in the ecclesiastical courts over his doctrinal position on the eucharist (Ditcher v. Denison), winning an appeal against his deprivation in 1858. He was editor of the Church and State Review from 1862 to 1865, and a regular contributor to religious, political and social controversies. In 1866 Denison wrote Ritualism and the Real Presence; A Letter to the Lord Bishop of Glouster and Bristol which he then published against the advice of the Bishop. The present volume does not contain so much of the Argument for the Defence as was placed before the Court on July 23rd and 24th. Including a theological argument with grounds and principles of defence with the Archdeacon's eight propositions, first published in March 1854. Contains papers on a principle of reference to Holy Scripture and antiquity, as well as argument from the formularies. In a cloth binding, covered with adhesive tape. Externally, generally smart with bumping to corners and head and tail of spine. Small closed tears to tape on corners of boards. Front hinge failed. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown with ink inscriptions to front free end-paper. Internally, generally firmly bound with light scattered spotting and small closed tears to occasional pages. Good. Seller Inventory # GEN19-H-4
