Defence of Lucknow, a Diary

The Defence of Lucknow, A Diary, by Thomas Fourness Wilson, is a compelling firsthand account of one of the most dramatic episodes of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Originally published anonymously, the diary records the daily experiences of those trapped within the British Residency at Lucknow from 31 May to 25 September 1857. Wilson provides a vivid ground-level perspective on the siege, describing relentless artillery fire, mining operations, shortages of food, disease, and mounting casualties. His observations capture not only the military challenges faced by the garrison but also the fear, resilience, and psychological strain of prolonged confinement. An absorbing and valuable primary source, this diary offers an intimate insight into the realities of siege warfare and the human experience of the Lucknow Residency.
