A Defence Of The Scots Highlanders, In General; And Some Learned Characters, In Particular: : With A New And Satisfactory Account Of The Picts, Scots, ... Respecting The High Antiquities Of Scotland

Fiery in spirit yet precise in argument, John Lanne Buchanan stands up for a people long maligned. Here, the Highlands finally speak. First published in the closing years of the eighteenth century, A Defence Of The Scots Highlanders is far more than a polemic: it is a sweeping Scottish Highlands history book, tracing the reputation of Highland communities, the learned figures who studied them, and the deep roots of Picts and Scots origins in Britain's far north. Interweaving antiquarian research, linguistic observation, and carefully gathered tradition, Buchanan enters the Fingal Ossian poems debate and the wider Ossian controversy with a cool yet passionate intelligence. His attention to clan names, lineages, place-names, and early sources turns the volume into a lasting Celtic studies reference work and an invaluable aid for Scottish genealogy research, Scottish Highlands clans antiquities, and anyone drawn to the world of Scottish clans and tartans. As a work of eighteenth century Scottish scholarship, it stands as a Scottish antiquarian classic reprint that still speaks directly to modern readers and Celtic history students. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For casual lovers of Highland lore, serious researchers, and curators of private libraries, it offers both a defence of Scottish Highlanders and a nuanced, enduring study of Scotland's cultural and historical imagination.
