At the close of the seventeenth century, a small Scottish venture in the Darien jungle threatened to redraw the map of empire. History turns on fragile ventures. In A Defence Of The Scots Settlement At Darien, journalist and polemicist George Ridpath mounts a spirited case for the Company of Scotland Trading's project on the isthmus of Panama. Ridpath answers the Spanish memorial protesting the colony, offers a detailed description of the country and harbour, and supplies a particular account of the Scots settlers themselves. Set against fierce English Spanish imperial rivalry and central america colonization history, his tract urges England to protect the settlement, anticipating later debates around the union of England Scotland and the fate of late seventeenth century Britain.
