Add to basketThe Defender Magazine, August 1939 Wichita, Kansas/Philadelphia, Pa.: The Defender Magazine/Religious Press Association Two 11.5" x 8.5" newsprint leaves, printed both sides, numbered pp. 3-6. No binding, perhaps lacking first leaf, although it very much appears that numbered p. 3 is the front page. Light edge wear and chipping. Good condition. An uncommon early issue of this Christian (read: Anti-Semitic) periodical, one of several published by F.W. Ayer's Religious Press Association (formed in 1882). The Association was touted as "the only concern of its kind that has survived and stood the test, made by advertisers and papers and advertising agents, that it is serving the interests of all for both present and future good." This issue of August 1939 includes a piece on "Yellow Journalism," decrying "the injustice done our work" by the editor of the Saturday Evening Post, as well as several small "Items of Interest" regarding national and international politics, stressing "conclusively that the Communist movement of the world is Jewish." There were ads for "Christ-Honoring" greeting cards, the American Christian Benevolent Society, books and publishers and, inexplicably, "soothing BLEMO ointment." OCLC shows limited holdings of The Defender at 36 institutions, nearly all of which postdate this issue.
