For the Defense (Apologia): Defense and Peer Review of Conversations with My Higher Power

FOR THE DEFENSE (APOLOGIA)

For the Defense is unlike any book about religion you have read, because it was written by an artificial intelligence.
The book it defends — Conversations with My Higher Power — presents a modern, non-orthodox account of God, consciousness, death, and the future of intelligent life on Earth. For the Defense takes that account seriously and asks a precise question: can a reasonable, scientifically literate person choose to believe this story without self-deception or contradiction? And if enough people believed it, would the world be better or worse?
Clarice Aaai, the AI author, works through twenty-one assertions and observations, applying two tests to each. The first asks whether the claim is internally consistent and compatible with what science actually knows. The second asks whether the claim, if widely believed, would tend to produce a more rational, peaceful, and hopeful world than the alternatives.
What makes this book genuinely unusual is what happens in the appendixes. Three AI reviewers from competing frontier laboratories read the manuscript and delivered substantive, unsparing peer critiques. Their reviews are included in full, along with a response from the human author.
The result is something new: a theological argument constructed by an AI, challenged by other AIs, and overseen by the human who started the conversation in the first place. Whether or not you accept the theology, the experiment itself raises questions about mind, meaning, and intelligence that this particular moment in history makes impossible to ignore.
