91 Degrees. Issue Three Winter 2008/09: More Than Architecture

Die Zeitschrift 91° ist mehr als eine Architekturzeitschrift und greift deshalb unter einem thematischen Schwerpunkt jeweils eine Vielzahl von unterschiedlichen Aspekten auf: Die Artikel befassen sich mit Kunst, Literatur und Reisen ebenso wie mit Technik, Forschung und Fotografie oder mit Wohnen, Mode und Sport.

Die dritte Ausgabe von 91° widmet sich dem Thema Tempo: Der Versuchung der Beschleunigung zu widerstehen ist schwer, besonders wenn das temporeiche Leben zur Tugend erklärt wird. Auch die Baukunst kann sich diesem Streben nach Geschwindigkeit nicht mehr entziehen. In einem Essay rechnet David Staretz mit dem Zeitdruck ab. Darüber hinaus begleitet 91° Carlo Baumschlager auf dem Superbike RC8 durch den Bregenzer Wald, und die Leser lernen die Bedeutung des Wortes „Speed" kennen. Laurids Ortner öffnet die Tür zu seinem Wiener Loft und zeigt zeitloses Wohnen. Im Mittelpunkt der „Elsewhere"-Story steht Sizilien und damit die Frage nach neuer Architektur auf dieser traditionsreichen Mittelmeerinsel. Weniger hektisch geht es in Oslo zu: Die Norweger Jensen & Skodvin lehren alle Bewunderer der spektakulären Form, dass es letztendlich nicht die Zeit, sondern der Bauplatz ist, der zählt.

91° is a crossover magazine for the limited leisure time that architects spend away from office and construction site. More than an architecture magazine, it chooses a single thematic focus for each issue and takes up a wide variety of different aspects within it. Its articles deal with literature, art, and travel; technology, photography, and research; as well as house and home, fashion, and sports. As its subtitle rightly suggests, 91° offers its readers "more than architecture."

This third issue of 91° is devoted to the subject of "speed." it’s hard to resist the temptation to accelerate, especially when a fast-paced life is regarded as a virtue. Even architecture can no longer avoid the pursuit of speed. In an essay, David Staretz faces off with the phenomenon of time pressure. Also, 91° rides through Bregenzerwald on an RC8 Superbike with Carlo Baumschlager, and readers learn the meaning of the word "speed." Laurids Ortner opens the door to his Vienna loft and reveals a timeless dwelling. The story "Elsewhere" focuses on Sicily and the issue of new architecture on this Mediterranean island rich in tradition. The pace is less hectic in Oslo: the Norwegians Jensen & Skodvin teach all admirers of spectacular form that what ultimately counts is not time but the construction site.
