A view of the water gap on the border of the U.S. states of New Jersey and Pennsylvania where the Delaware River cuts through a large ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. A group of people recreating with rowboats in the foreground. Steel engraving on wove paper, sheet size 238 x 321 mm. Engraved by Robert Hinshelwood after Granville Perkins, published by D. Appleton & Co., New York, dated 1872. Robert Hinshelwood (1812-?, active 1855-) was a British born American printmaker and engraver, born in Edinburgh. He moved to the US around 1835 and was employed as landscape engraver by the Harpers and other NYC publishers. Granville Perkins (1830-1895) was an American illustrator and painter, best known for landscape and marine subjects. He contributed illustrations to numerous journals and books of the 1870s and 1880s. In good condition, some scattered soiling in the margin edges, right margin edge dampstained.
