Print on Demand. This book investigates animal and human behavior in relation to a specific stimulus-response experiment. The author goes to great lengths to explain how traditional laboratory methods are insufficient to conclude that an animal's response is prompted by an absent stimulus. They discuss the theory of images and ideas, considering an animal's ability to conceptualize and remember objects, subsequently demonstrating how the author's results open up new possibilities for the study of animal intelligence. The experiments described in this book are part of a long history of scientific debate regarding whether animals possess the ability to problem-solve and learn. The author provides a comprehensive review of current research on animal intelligence, arguing that the presence of images in an animal's consciousness is not necessary to explain their behavior, challenging traditional models of behaviorism. The author's experiments provide new insights into the nature of animal intelligence and learning, and offer a fresh perspective on the relationship between humans and animals. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Explore how animals and young children act when the trigger cue is absent, and what that reveals about learning and consciousness.
This volume examines delayed reactions in mammals and children, asking what guides behavior when a stimulus is no longer present. It compares different species, analyzes how responses endure after a cue disappears, and discusses competing explanations from sensory versus imaginal thought. The work balances detailed experimentation with a critical review of past data to clarify what counts as evidence for higher mental processes.
- Clear tests of how long an animal can wait and still respond correctly after the cue fades.
- Examination of whether behavior reflects sensory thought, imaginal thought, or other factors.
- Discussion of differences among rats, dogs, and raccoons in learning and delay.
- Practical insights into how researchers interpret conscious processes in nonhuman subjects.
Ideal for readers of psychology, animal behavior, and learning science who want a rigorous look at how minds may function without immediate stimuli.
