Item description from seller

Print on Demand. This book examines the operational inefficiencies of freight terminals and rail yards in early 20th century Boston. The author, a researcher from MIT, conducted extensive studies of numerous freight yards in the Boston area, with input from teamsters and railroad employees, including an analysis of over 2,000 inbound and outbound shipments to and from the city's largest freight terminals. The study found that these terminals operated at maximum capacity for only 1-2 hours per day, resulting in excessive wait times for teamsters. The author argues that these inefficiencies could be reduced by improving communication between railroad workers and teamsters, increasing the number of available doors for loading and unloading freight, and encouraging the use of sorting gangs to keep freight organized within terminals. The author concludes that these relatively simple changes could significantly improve the efficiency of freight terminals and reduce the time wasted by teamsters, which would ultimately benefit both the railroad companies and those who rely on them. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
