Two-volume set. Pages clean except for a bookplate at ffep (L. Lafore, my fellow Iowans) and a touch of toning along edges; both bindings are secure, both green cloth hardcovers noticeably browned along the edges, including toning and fading of the spine title plates, as well as short, thin scuffs across both backstrips; wear at corners and spine ends includes some fraying; otherwise sound. Gilded head edges; some pages uncut. xlix, 417; v, 419-868pp. incl. index in second volume. Lacking the Bowen revisions, this edition (identical in content to the Colonial Press edition of the same year except with the Bigelow introduction) is largely of historical interest only; contents and section divisions in later translations are more closely aligned with Tocqueville's original (Tocqueville himself criticized Reeve's work as too loosely translated, which is perhaps a generous way of putting it).
