The Demon Expelled; Or, The Influence Of Satan And The Power Of Christ Displayed In The Extraordinary Affliction And Gracious Relief Of John Evans, A Boy About Ten Years Of Age, At Plymouth-Dock by James Heaton. This work presents a detailed narrative and theological analysis of a boy’s alleged demoniacal case in Plymouth-Dock during the early 19th century, weighing competing explanations from medicine, religion, and popular belief. The account chronicles the boy’s violent fits, convulsions, and strange demonstrations of strength and behavior, described in daily observations by a neighbor who sought to uncover the truth. It discusses widespread public interest, medical interventions that failed to restore speech or reason, and the social currents of witchcraft and demoniacal possession then coursing through Devon and surrounding towns. After a series of prayerful tests, adjuration, and communal religious rites, the boy is reported to be delivered and restored to health, with the narrative arguing that the event demonstrates the power of Christ over evil. The text also engages with perennial debates about the reality of demonic influence, citing biblical examples and patristic authorities to defend a spiritual interpretation of the case and to encourage faith and perseverance in the face of affliction.
