A scarce archival LP vinyl recording af Anton Rubinstein's 1871 opera, with libretto by Pavel Viskovatov (based on the poem by Mikhail Lermontov). It was premiered at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg in 1875, then at the Bolshoi in Moscow in 1879. NOTE: This is a "live" performance, from a 1974 radio broadcast. CONDITION: The discs are not what we would consider "high fidelity" but do reflect an excellent overall musical performance. The surfaces are generally quiet, with light surface noise occasionally apparent when the musical textures thin out. The record box is solid, square, and unmarked, with only light shelf-wear. [NOTE: 3/4s in on Side 5 there is a small recording (or pressing) anomaly (flutter), lasting no more than a second.] The 4-page insert (containing the recording's cast, a scene-by-scene synopsis, and historical notes on the opera) is pristine. The set is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve and will be securely packed and promptly shipped, domestically (USA) and internationally.
