Synopsis
El joven Lorenzo sueña que es un antiguo soldado griego amante de la magia al que se aparece en sueños Polemón, compañero de armas que le salvó la vida en una batalla. Este le describe las terribles pesadillas que le ocasiona Smarra, un siniestro vampiro de los sueños, «un monstruo sin color ni forma, que brinca y aúlla» y disfruta atormentando a los durmientes. es una de las novelas más extrañas y radicales salidas de la pluma de Charles Nodier, la historia de una pesadilla dentro de otra pesadilla, que recrea uno de los monstruos más espeluznantes de la literatura. La obra, donde encontramos resonancias a Shakespeare, Goethe, la novela gótica y los hermanos Grimm (de quien fue un ferviente admirador), es un ejemplo de la poderosa imaginación de Nodier y su idea del sueño como fuente de conocimiento. Sus imágenes oníricas, fúnebres, macabras, barrocas y a veces desconcertantes son sin embargo muy modernas, y pueden considerarse como un anticipo de Poe, Kafka y del surrealismo.

Escritor, traductor y bibliotecario francés, Charles Nodier (1780-1844) fue conocido tanto por su activismo político en los años posteriores a la Revolución francesa, siendo prisionero durante la época del Terror y luego exiliado y represaliado en posteriores épocas. Nodier fue considerado un pensador de renombre, excelente bibliotecario y un activo promotor cultural, colaborador de numerosas revistas y habitual de tertulias de indudable prestigio. De su obra, además de sus ensayos sobre crítica literaria, política o bibliotecas, hay que destacar sus títulos dedicados al relato, siendo habitua.
