The Demonstration

A nation's darkest hour. A general's impossible choice. And the only weapon that could save them both.

In the autumn of 2026, America is at war with Iran. The bombs have fallen. The Strait is closed. And in a basement beneath Tehran, a dying general launches the most audacious intelligence operation in modern history—an operation that will place fifty-two operatives inside the American homeland, poised to strike.

But what they carry is not what anyone expects.

In a dry cleaners in Ohio, a family of Iranian immigrants who have spent nineteen years building an American life receives a phone call they prayed would never come. In a cubicle at Langley, a veteran intelligence officer named Marion Voss notices a word in an intercepted message that no one else can see. And in a brownstone in Washington, a president whose authority is built on fear and grievance faces the one thing he cannot tolerate: being laughed at.

THE DEMONSTRATION is a work of political fiction that asks the question history has never answered: when the trigger is in your hand, what stays it?

Based on documented historical events—from the 1953 CIA coup that toppled Iran's democracy to the Iran-Contra arms deals, the downing of Iran Air Flight 655, the abandoned JCPOA nuclear agreement, and the unprovoked war that followed—this novel imagines a moment of reckoning, and projects forward into a plausible near-future conclusion to an ongoing war. What happens when an adversary with every reason to destroy America chooses to teach the world an important lesson—and proves it, in plain sight, on our own soil?

Drawing on James J. Devine's years as a political strategist, The Demonstration is both a gripping thriller and a profound meditation on power, truth, and what happens when a nation's intelligence apparatus can no longer recognize the truth when it sees it.
