About the Authors
Y Y Kueh is an internationally renowned expert on the Chinese economy. He was born in Simanggang, Sarawak, studied in New Asia College, Hong Kong and obtained his PhD degree from Marburg University, Germany. Before he joined Lingnan University as Chair Professor of Economics and Dean of Social Sciences, he was a Professor of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and had served as founding Director of the Centre for Chinese Political Economy at Macquarie University, Sydney. Prof. Kueh has authored multiple papers at China Quarterly and edited over 10 books covering different aspects of the Chinese economy. His monumental work on Agricultural Instability in China elucidated the influence of weather on China's food production from 1930s to 1960s. In China's New Industrialization Strategy, he attempted to answer the fundamental question: Was Chairman Mao really necessary in the modernization of Chinese economy? Among his other books are: The Chinese Economy under Deng Xiaoping, PAX SINICA Geopolitics and Economics of China's Ascendance, and Xi Jinping: Negating Mao Zedong Will Result in Chaos (Xi Jinping: Fou Ding Le Mao Zedong Tian Xia Hui Da Luan).
Qu Feng is the Head of Economics Division, and associate professor, School of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He joined NTU after obtaining his PhD in economics at Syracuse University in 2009. He is also a senior associate editor of Singapore Economic Review, a journal of the Economic Society of Singapore. His research interests include Chinese economy, financial markets and econometrics. His research papers appear in Journal of Econometrics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Applied Econometrics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, etc. Dr Feng was honored at NTU Convocation Ceremony 2013 for inspirational teaching and mentorship, and was nominated for the Nanyang Award for Research Excellence, NTU, 2012 and 2021, respectively. He received China Finance Review International Research Excellent Award in 2024.
Zhao Chen is Professor of Economics and Deputy Director, China Center for Economic Studies, Fudan University, China. His current research interest covers industrial polices and environment regulation. He teaches Principles of Economics and Economics of Information at Fudan University. He used to be Senior Associate Member at St. Antony's College, Oxford University, visiting scholar at IDEI, University of Toulouse I, France and visiting scholar of UNU-WIDER at Helsinki, Finland. He has published papers on Chinese economy in international journals such as American Economic Review, Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and Review of Economic Studies.
