Dentinal Hypersensitivity

Dentinal hypersensitivity is a common condition that causes a short, sharp pain when teeth are exposed to cold, hot, sweet, or sour foods, cold air, or touch. It occurs when the protective enamel or gums wear away, exposing the dentin, which contains tiny channels leading to the nerve of the tooth. According to the hydrodynamic theory, movement of fluid inside these channels triggers the nerve and causes pain. Common causes include gum recession, tooth wear, aggressive brushing, and periodontal treatment. Treatment involves removing the cause, using desensitizing toothpaste or fluoride products, and maintaining good oral hygiene to reduce discomfort.
