COMPLETE TWO VOLUME SET. Caxton Edition with illustrations. Gilt title and motif on green cloth boards. Boards are clean and unmarked apart from a very small mark to spine and front corner of Vol.II with no wear apart from a pinprick size mark to spine of Vol.I. Internally there is age darkening to endpapers, the occasional spots of light foxing else clean, tight and unmarked. Top edge gilt. Fore and lower edges uncut. Military and Political Life. Volume I - 362 pages. Volume II - 353 pages. [Of the three divisions of this story, as published in the Edition Définitive, upon which this edition is based, only the first - The Election - is by Balzac, the rest is by Charles Rabon. Much of the portion added by Rabon, including the whole of La Famille Beauvisage, is omitted in the Edition Définitive, as will appear by reference to the articles in Cerfberr and Christophe's Repertory, relating to Dorlange-Sallenauve, Cécile Beauvisage, Philéas Beauvisage and others of the characters who figure in these volumes.] Balzac's magnum opus of novels, short stories and plays which present French life after the fall of Napoleon I in 1815. A founding work of 'Realism' in literature which influenced many writers including Émile Zola, Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Henry James. La Comédie Humaine remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1850 as Balzac had planned to include more works.
