TRANSLATION & INTRODUCTION : John Veitch (1829 - 1894) Veitch was Professor of Logic and Rhetoric in the University of Glasgow. It was his translation that first introduced the general English reading public to the works of Descartes.
SPECIAL INTRODUCTION : Frank Sewall (1837 - 1915) Sewall, President of Urbana College (1870 - 86) was a Pastor of the Swedenborgian National Church in Washington DC. He translated several of Swedenborg's theological works, and was also a hymnologist, writing over 20 hymns. He translated Immanuel Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason".

PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover; size = 6 1/4" x 9 1/8"; binding is green cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering on spine; top text-block edge dyed pale red; fore-edge is rough-cut; [xx] + 371 pages. No dust-jacket.

CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, with the following particulars noted :
EXTERIOR - Front cover has a small barely perceptible ink smudge. Rear cover has some minimal spotting. There is some light abrasion to upper spine extremity. Lower board edges have some shelf-rub. Top edge of text-block is rubbed, the fore- and bottom text-block edges display toning.
BINDING - Solid - leaves open widely, but the whole is unshaken and no leaves are loose.
INTERIOR - End-paper paste-downs are considerably foxed (this is, I believe, a production effect from the glue used to attach the paper to the board), else end-papers are slightly toned but clean. One page has some darkening, a ghost of a piece of paper that had been inserted in the book. Page 213 has broken type. Else, interior is clean, unmarked. There is a small bookstore label at the bottom of the rear paste-down : "Witkowers Booksellers and Stationers - 77-79 Asylum St., Hartford Conn."
