8vo. pp. 8. A souvenir booklet issued at the time of the opening of the Embankment with a brief history of the project including quantities of material used. BL is the only location traced. Proposed as early as 1666 by Christopher Wren following the Great Fire of London, it took a further 200 years before a scheme came to fruition which incorporated landing stages, subways and drainage works prepared for the Metropolitan Board of Works by their Chief Engineer Joseph Bazalgette as a response to the 'Great Stink' of 1858. The works improved the flow of the river and diverted raw sewage by means of sewers and pumps downsteam where it was let out into the Thames at high water.
