To most nonscientifically oriented readers, molecular biology is a jumble of jargon concerning DNA, gene transcription, and messenger RNA. Dulbecco, a Nobel laureate in physiology, has written a clear, detailed, yet nontechnical exposition of biology at the molecular level. He also relates micro- and sub-micro biological processes to the development of the whole organism. He concludes with excellent chapters on the machinery and design of the brain and an epilogue on lifewhat it is and how it began.
