The transceiver is a completely new topology, using a modified PLL operated in both open-loop and closed-loop configurations, and using oscillator injection locking to accomplish FM demodulation with a minimum of circuitry. The receiver communicates across 1.75 m at 5.2 GHz while consuming 285 uW when duty cycled in a typical application.

About the Author

Dr. Popplewell received his PhD in 2010 from Carleton University, Canada. In 2008 he joined Skyworks Solutions, designing analog/RF ICs for wireless applications. For his academic research he was awarded Carleton?s University Medal (2010), the IEEE SSCS Pre-Doctoral Fellowship (2007), and the NSERC of Canada Postgraduate Scholarship (2002-05).
