"Desperate Measures" was first published in 1970 under the David Godine imprint, Though it met with favorable reviews, became the basis for the 1971 movie featuring Shirley Mclain, and was generally very highly regarded it ultimately fell out of print at some point (late 80's?). This is the Uncorrected Proof of W.W. Norton's 1999 reissue of "Desparate Characters" , a book that Jonathan Franzen called, "he greatest realist novel of the postwar era" and that David Foster Wallace called "A sustained work of prose so lucid and fine it seems less written than carved." Franzen contributes a new introduction. A scarce book to find as first edition and even more so in uncorrected proof form.
