The climax of Destination Intrigue,a true-crime thriller by James Edward Howell Jr. takes place on a small town airport on a foggy morning in December of 1981. A four-engine airplane, aDC-6 loaded with 22,500 pounds of marijuana landed in the early morning hours. It could have made a lot of men very rich. Instead, it was their doom.
Howell, who personally knew three of the men involved, traces the lives of the three main players in a major drug conspiracy. He begins with the founding of Aerial Agri-Service, an aerial application company that would dust crops for farmers. Howell shows how a simple business ballooned into a drug conspiracy that ruined the lives of dozens of people.
Howell covers the conspiracy from the initial idea to the December raid to the lasting repercussions for his friends. He combines his firsthand account of the conspiracy with research through law enforcement and the military. His true-crime adventure presents a cautionary tale about the temptations of the drug trade and the price many paid for their greed and ambition. While his work doesn’t condone the actions of those involved, it does show that they weren’t evil kingpins. They were simply human.
James Edward Howell Jr. studied at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He began his career in farming with his brother-in-law, Hunter Darden Jr. Howell saw new business potential around every corner and started a farm-equipment business, Howell Tractor Sales.
In 1970, Howell and Darden formed another business, Aerial Agri-Service. Howell had earned his commercial pilot’s license, and the two ran the aerial application business and farmed until 1984.
Howell decided to shift his focus from agriculture to real estate. He graduated from the Commercial and Industrial Real Estate Institute and worked as a site acquisition specialist for telecommunications companies.
Howell is a mason and member of Franklin Lodge #151 as well as the Khedive Temple Shrine. He flew child patients of Shriners Hospitals to their appointments. He is now retired and devoting his time to writing. Destination Intrigue is Howell’s second book.
