Detroit Flow: Born to Build

Big dreams start quietly.

Twelve-year-old Nya Monroe doesn’t think anyone’s paying much attention. She listens more than she talks. She sketches more than she speaks. But everything starts to shift the day she imagines her own future on wheels—and designs it by hand.

With a growing love for cars, design, and her hometown streets, Nya begins sketching the Flowmobile—a car that blends Detroit’s history with its future. Quiet afternoons become bursts of ideas. Cardboard models rise from kitchen tables. And a voice that once lived only in pencil lines starts to find the courage to be seen.

As Nya’s vision grows, so does the pressure: rejection, self-doubt, and second guesses. Now she must decide: Will she keep building the dream in her head—or put it on the road for the world to see?

Detroit Flow is a story full of engines, sketches, rhythm, and soul—perfect for fans of Front Desk, Ways to Make Sunshine, and Miles Morales: Shock Waves. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Detroit, this illustrated middle grade novel celebrates the spirit of reinvention, resilience, and riding in your own lane.

Detroit Flow is the third book in a new series spotlighting kids with bold voices from cities across the country. Each book follows a different character—until their stories start to weave together in unexpected and inspiring ways.
