Developing assertiveness - Anni Townend

Developing Assertiveness is written to help managers learn how to develop assertiveness in themselves and others at work. Designed in an attractive workbook format, the book provides a step-by-step, structured approach to help readers assess and develop their own assertiveness. The first part of the workbook contains a self-perception questionnaire for the reader to complete. There are descriptions of typical non-assertive behaviours: passive, manipulative, and aggressive, and case studies illustrating how these hinder effective management. In the second part the manager is taken through a number of exercises for developing assertiveness. These include positive self recognition, relaxation, positive visualization and the use of appropriate communication skills. The final sections of the book are devoted to showing how these skills can be used to develop assertiveness and a positive attitude in others at work by recognizing problems, learning to give and receive feedback and through counselling. Users of the workbook will find it offers useful help and guidance, not only on the qualities managers need themselves but on how they can help build a successful work team.
