Development and Disaster Management: A Study of the Northeastern States of India

This book explores the nexus between disasters and development, examining human geography and governance institutions in a vulnerable Himalayan region of India. It delves into the causes, context, and impacts of disasters, demonstrating that effective disaster management relies on good governance. Despite increasing disaster frequency, development lags due to inadequate governance, and communities innovate to cope. A bottom-up approach is crucial for cost-effective resilience plans, as diverse challenges require tailored solutions. Over a decade since the Disaster Management Act (DMA) 2005, northeastern states await its full implementation. The book advocates for urgent action, including inter-agency coordination, local governance involvement, CBO mobilization, and institutional training. State governments should hold State Disaster Management Authorities accountable and encourage proactive community engagement for effective resilience building.
