About this Item
Georgi Valentinovich Plekhanov (1856 - 1918) was a Russian revolutionary philosopher. "The Development of the Monist View of History" is likely his most important book. It was translated into English in 1947 by Andrew Rothstein. At the time of its first publication in Russia in 1895, Plekhanov used the pseudonym of N. Beltov to get past the Russian state censors. This is the 1956 reprint issued by the Foreign Language publishing house in Moscow, Soviet Union. The book contains a facsimile of the original title page of the 1895 First Edition. *************************************** Plekhanov was one of the first Russians to become a Marxist. He was the founder of the social-democratic movement in Russia, and ultimately rejected Bolshevism. He was firmly against all forms of terrorism. Because of his adamant philosophical position and hostility towards Lenin he lived in exile in Switzerland for many years. Towards the end of his life he returned to Russia, hailed as a hero; even though he had been hostile to and criticized Bolshevism, as well as both Lenin and Trotsky. *************************************** Plekhanov insisted that "Marxism was a materialistic doctrine rather than an idealist one, and that Russia would have to pass through a capitalist stage of development before becoming socialist." After Plekhanov's death, Lenin stated that , "It is impossible to become an intelligent and genuine communist without studying all that Plekhanov has written on philosophy, for what he has written is the best that can be found in the whole international literature on Marxism."
