Development of Social Competency among Adolescents: Role of Parents

Adolescence marks a period of emotional instability and imbalance. A sudden change from great elation to total dejection may be seen in adolescent behaviour. The self assertive instinct reaches maximum development. Adolescents crave the recognition and love. They want to be consulted and feel insulted if their opinions are not taken into account in deciding policies either at home or at school. The gregarious instinct fully develops and per group influence on them becomes great. They want to be independent and opportunities for self-expression. Adolescence is the most important and critical period of individuals development. Parents and teachers have a vital role to play in the life of adolescents. They can build and develop their life in a successful manner. It is important to recognise that adolescents need social and emotional support that may require reinforcement of norms of positive behaviour, acquisition of skills essential to cope with the risky situations that they encounter in their lives. The present work becomes very meaningful and helpful to know about the parental role in development of social competence among adolescence under Indian conditions and background.
