On the Development and Structure of the Whale, Vol. 1: On the Development of the Dolphin (Classic Reprint)

This book, published in 1896, delves into the embryonic development and structure of whales, specifically examining dolphins. The authors fuse historical context of cetacean study with detailed descriptions of dolphin embryos, charting the species' growth from tiny embryos to nearly fully developed fetuses. Combining the works of previous scientists like Eschricht and Kukenthal with their own careful observations, the authors contribute original insights into the formative stages of these marine mammals. Their research elucidates the unique characteristics of dolphin embryos, such as the presence of rudimentary hind limbs, shedding light on the evolutionary history of whales and their relationship to other species. The authors' findings advance our understanding of the development of these fascinating creatures, providing a valuable resource for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
