Development Windows: Essays in Honour of Professor V. M. Rao

In an attempt to address some of the concerns confronted in literature, this book takes a fresh perspective on developing countries such as India. The volume, comprising numerous contributions by well-known scholars and experts, provides a partial peep through a few windows to observe economic development. Focusing on five areas—aggregate economic development, agricultural development, irrigation development, poverty, and issues of governance—this record argues for the necessity of a holistic understanding of the economy and society in question as well as for the development of indigenous ways of thinking. It also touches upon promising themes of development both at micro and macro levels to legitimize the well-deserved places for the issues among the imminent problems.

R. S. Deshpande is the director of the Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) in Bangalore, India. He is a former consultant to the Department for International Development, Land Equity, and the World Bank, and has served on many policy bodies of the government of India and the government of Karnataka. K. V. Raju is an economic advisor to the chief minister of the government of Karnataka and a former professor and head at the Center for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources at ISEC. S. M. Jharwal is the chairman of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority in New Delhi, India. D. Rajasekhar is a professor and the head of the Center for Decentralization and Development at ISEC.
