The Devil is an Ass

The main plot follows the protagonist, a young man named Cokes, who is led astray by his desire for wealth and social status. Through a series of deceptions, Cokes is tricked into believing he has obtained great riches, which leads him to pursue an advantageous marriage to a wealthy woman. Meanwhile, other characters are also duped, and Pug's interactions cause further complications. Throughout the play, Jonson critiques the materialism and moral blindness of society. In the end, the characters face their consequences. Cokes’ misguided ambitions lead him into a farcical marriage, while Pug returns to Hell, having failed in his mission to sow genuine destruction. The play ends with a moral lesson on the dangers of vanity and greed, with Jonson emphasizing the absurdity of human pretensions. It remains a sharp commentary on the follies of those seeking power and wealth at any cost.
