Diary Of Ananda Ranga Pillai (Volume VI)

Behind the grand strategies of empires lie the daily bargains, rivalries, and anxieties that shaped the coast of Coromandel. Hear colonial Pondicherry speak, unfiltered. Diary Of Ananda Ranga Pillai (Volume VI), edited by H. Dodwell, continues the celebrated complete diary series kept by the French governors' chief broker and interpreter in mid-eighteenth century India. This historical diary volume brings you close to the workings of the French East India Company: negotiations, patronage, price movements, court intrigues, and the constant pressure of war and diplomacy. Read it for the texture of 18th century South India, where merchants, soldiers, and officials met at the counting-house door and in the street, and where eighteenth century trade networks linked local produce to global power. Moving from private concerns to public negotiations, it traces the rhythms of colonial Pondicherry India with uncommon clarity, balancing personal voice and hard fact, and revealing how power travelled through letters, ledgers, and introductions. Valued as a primary source collection drawn from the milieu later mined by French colonial archives, Pillai's record is indispensable for South India colonial politics and for understanding Dupleix in India beyond legend. It speaks equally to South Asia history students building context and to colonial history researchers tracing decisions and consequences in real time. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure for readers who prize classic documentary literature and libraries built to last.
