The Diary of a Judge

The Diary Of A Judge offers a mosaic of Napoleonic-era and early 19th-century tales, framed as translations from a Baron’s notebooks with a prefatory note about a judge and the translator’s fiction-versus-fact balance. The excerpt compiles crime, romance, social satire, melodrama, and philosophical fantasy across European settings from Bruges to London to Belem Castle and Dijon. It centers on sensational narratives such as The Trial, a courtroom portrait of how evidence and procedure mold verdict and fate; The Miseries of Artificial Teeth, a comic memoir of prosthetic teeth navigating social humiliations; ARASMANES; or, THE SEEKER, a mythic quest about utopia and the peril of wealth; The Parvenu Countess, a critique of class hypocrisy; Fortune’s Frolics, a troupe of professional lives satirizing fortune and mobility; Minnie Grey, a rural tragedy about longing and postponed happiness. The collection probes guilt, forgiveness, reputation, and the lure of wealth and illusion, using irony, tragedy, and satire to question certainty, virtue, and the boundaries between history and fiction.
