The Diary of the Lady Anne Clifford: With an Introductory Note by V. Sackville-West (Paperback or Softback)

"The Diary of the Lady Anne Clifford" offers a compelling and intimate glimpse into the life of one of the 17th century's most formidable women. As the Countess of Pembroke, Anne Clifford recorded her experiences during a tumultuous period of English history, providing a rare first-hand account of aristocratic life under the Stuart monarchs. The diary chronicles her persistent legal battles to reclaim her rightful inheritance, her complex domestic relationships, and the management of her extensive northern estates. Her writing reveals a woman of great resilience, intellect, and independence, navigating the social and political constraints of her era.

This edition features an insightful introductory note by the celebrated author V. Sackville-West, who provides historical context and literary appreciation for Clifford's narrative voice. The work serves as an essential primary source for scholars of women's history and the social history of Early Modern England, while remaining a deeply personal record of one woman's determination to control her own legacy. Through her meticulous observations, readers gain access to the daily routines, grand ceremonies, and personal reflections that defined the life of a high-ranking noblewoman in the 1600s.
