Dodington's Diary was never meant to be published, for according to Leslie Stephen in the DNB, "it is the most curious illustration in existence of the character of the servile place-hunters of the time, with unctuous professions of virtuous sentiment to heighten the effect. It also contains some curious historical information, especially as to the Prince and Princess of Wales during the period 1749-60." Provenance: artist and author Ellis Cornelia Knight,1757-1837 (her signature to title-page) Nineteenth-century half black polished calf and cloth, gilt spine, red leather spine label, marbled endpapers. Engraved portrait of Dodington laid in. Cloth covers a little faded across top edge, extremities of spine and corners a little rubbed [iii]-xv, [i], 504 pp., lacking half-title. 1 vols. 8vo.
