Complete in two volumes. The author was the aide-de-camp and Chief of the Household of the recently overthrown and executed Emperor Maximilian and was with the emperor as he sought to escape the Republican forces during the fall of the Empire. Includes several b/w illustrations. Vol.I-xvi+320pp, Vol.II-328pp. Three-quarter bound in calf with red cloth to remainder and marbled page edges. Spines have five raised bands and a black morocco title plate with gilt lettering. There is a gilt stamp of the Library of Parliament, New South Wales to the centre of the upper boards. Leather is heavily rubbed, particularly at extremities, the boards are now protected by a removable plastic dust-jacket. Endpapers are marbled, pages throughout are toned with some foxing, heavier to the subsequent endpapers, title pages and preliminary pages.
